Great read, thank you! Sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy hearing academics say that it’s controversial whether social media addiction is real, based on the argument that mental health is complex and multi factorial. Of course mental health is complex and multi factorial, but this doesn’t mean a product designed to be addictive doesn’t bear responsibility.

This is completely misdirected. Review the young woman victim's and her therapist's testimony. Were this a criminal trial, Meta's intent would be relevant. In a civil trial, the issue is damage.

No way should this violently and psychologically abusive mother get rich over the appalling damage she did to her daughter, and her violent, abandoning father was grotesquely awful as well. There is just about no case that Meta or social media is any significant contributor to this young woman's troubles.

I hate Big Tech. If they can be shown guilty of criminal intent to harm users, I'd be delighted to see them severely regulated, fined and sued into oblivion, and broken into small platforms.

Likewise, parents who file suits like this need to be subjected to relentless scrutiny and prosecuted for abuses uncovered at trial. Lawmakers should ban abusive parents from receiving settlement money from cases like this.

All this, of course, presumes a society that actually cared about young people, which this one doesn't.
